“Eagles don’t flock, you find them one at the time” (Ross Perot).
Perot’s observation is correct, yet if you came by the Tennessee Baptist Convention Conference Center in Brentwood a few days ago, you would have discovered a highly unusual sight: eagles gathered.
Twenty former presidents of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, dating back to 1975 came together in response to an invitation by our current president (Dean Haun of First Baptist Church, Morristown) and myself to discuss the implementation of Vision 2021.
Three of our guests were above 90 years of age and remarkably vibrant. We were joined by Chuck Groover, chairman of our implementation team.
I’ve often leaned on Proverbs 15:22, “Plans fail for lack of counsel; but in the multitude of counsel there is success.” Even King David surrounded himself with “men of Issachar who understood the times and knew the right course to take” (I Chronicles 12:32).
These consultants to the king were called chiefs. A powerful principle of Scripture was exercised on March 5: wisdom from Godly, proven leaders was sought.
For five hours we fellowshipped, shared clear perspectives, exchanged incredible experience and shed light on a path for the future direction of the TBC.
This was an historic meeting. More importantly, it was a helpful meeting.
An attendance of 8 to 10 was hoped for. But when 20 responded to the plea for assistance, and then gave themselves to the collaborative effort, it was humbling. Our work was enriched and encouraged.
I am thankful for the privilege to have been in the presence of those who have given their lives to serving the King and have soared like eagles.

Brother Randy, you are so correct! This was an historic meeting. This gathering demonstrates to TN Baptists there is unity and great strength for the days ahead. Certainly, for the vast majority of TN Baptists this will be very reassuring. Great decision to convene the presidents. Floyd Craig
